We have a wide range of orthodontic options for teenagers!
Teen years are the most optimal time period to undergo orthodontic treatment, as they are in the middle of their most developmental growth stage.
During these years, the jaws and mouth are growing and easier to manipulate through orthodontic appliances. No tooth structure has been cemented in place, which means braces can easily shift them around into position.
Waiting until after a patient’s teen years for orthodontic treatment is not recommended as the jaw bones have finished growing and the teeth are set into their position. This will make orthodontic treatment more complex and increase the duration of the treatment.
What types of orthodontic treatments are available for teenagers?
The time-tested traditional metal braces are arguably the most effective at moving teeth, and the quickest.
However, the only drawbacks are that, quite often teenagers do not want to have the appearance of metal braces, however at HiTech Ortho we have other treatments to hide the appearance.
At HiTech Ortho we utilise SureSmile technology which allows us to visually show your desired smile, similar to the approach of clear aligners.
SureSmile allows us to plan the entire orthodontic treatment and allows for precise custom archwires which are manufactured by robots.
Cuts treatment time by 30% and improves quality.
For teens who want to enjoy the benefits of traditional braces, but don’t want the appearance, lingual braces may be for you.
Lingual braces are placed on the backside of your teeth, and the required time is very similar to traditional metal braces.
For teenagers that don’t want braces, we offer Invisalign Teen. Invisalign’s clear aligner system specifically made for teenagers.
In some cases if the malocclusion is quite severe, there may be a need for surgical orthodontics prior to orthodontic treatment.
How long will treatment take?
Treatment time varies per patient, as every patient is unique and reacts differently to treatment.
However, you can expect orthodontic treatment to generally last for 12 to 24 months on average.
Do braces hurt?
During the first few days after getting your braces put on, you may experience discomfort, however this should be fairly mild and never exceed a moderate threshold.
Discomfort will also be experienced by many patients, after braces have been tightened. The amount of discomfort you may experience is based on your treatment schedule and whether your archwires are tightened faster than usual.
Other than that, if you fail to maintain good dental hygiene or if your braces cut you, you will experience some discomfort.
What are the benefits of straighter teeth?
Teenagers can benefit from straight teeth in so many ways, including:
Better appearance with straight teeth
Straight teeth are easier to keep clean
Chewing and biting food is easier
Teeth suffer from less wear and tear
Less strain on the jaw joints (temporomandibular joints)
Less vulnerable to infections
